Shortcrust Pastry

We love savoury pies… and you cannot have a good pie without a good crust!

I always remember my mother at home making the pie crust herself from scratch. Even though you can find store bought pastry at every grocer/supermarket, I still prefer to make it myself. It is very easy to make, requires very few ingredients and you have the satisfaction that the pie is completely homemade 🙂

Shortcrust Pastry

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

Ingredients

  • 300g plain flour
  • 200g wholewheat flour* (see note below)
  • 200g cold margarine
  • Pinch of salt
  • 150ml cold water

Directions

  1. Start by mixing the flour, the salt and margarine until it resembles breadcrumbs. You can make it in a food processor or by hand using the ‘rubbing in’ method. Typically, I prefer to use my food processor to mix the flour and margarine together. If you are doing it by hand, you have to be careful to work as quickly as possible so it does not become greasy.
  2. Gradually, add the water until it is well combined.
  3. Wrap in cling film and chill for at least 15 minutes before use.

*Note: If you wish, you can substitute this with plain flour.
